Eminent poet, lyricist and director Sampooran Singh Kalra, popularly known as ‘Gulzar’, has taken over as the new Chancellor of Assam University, Silchar.

Gulzar (79) has replaced Prof M S Swaminathan, an Indian geneticist and chairman of MS Swaminathan Research Foundation, after his tenure of five-years ended.

Assam University Vice Chancellor, Somnath Dasgupta said that President of India Pranab Mukherjee has been pleased to appoint Gulzar for the top job of the central varsity for a term of five years.

“After getting the copy of the new chancellor’s appointment letter from the ministry of human resource development, I contacted Gulzar on the phone. He said he will soon be joining his new post at the Shastri Bhavan. Accordingly, AU has notified the appointment of the new chancellor the same day,” Dasgupta said.

VC informed that Gulzar will come to Assam University during its 13th convocation to be held on May 14, where President Mukherjee, who is the visitor of the central varsity, will attend as chief guest.

“We are looking forward for Gulzar’s fresh assignment and his forthcoming visit to the institution of higher education in Silchar,” he said, reported Times of India.
