Teaching has, for a long time, been approached from an abstract viewpoint. The actual situation, though is completely different. Teachers play a major role in society, and their work is subject to a range of internal workplace pressures and external societal pressures that influence their role, their target audience, namely their students, and the subject matter taught. The work of teachers today has undergone considerable change, and reflects new pressures that present specific challenges to teachers and teaching institutions. Without giving an exhaustive, in-depth account of all the changes affecting society and the education system, it is important to outline those that affect teachers specifically and, as a result, it has resulted in the great need for teachers’ training.

Kapil Sibal, the Union Minister of Human Resource Development inaugurated the teacher training programme for 10,000 teachers conducted by IIT Bombay under the Talk to a Teacher project of the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NME-ICT). It’s for the first time that a simultaneous training of 10,000 engineering college teachers is being conducted leveraging the broadband network and ICT tools.

The training programme will be carried on through 168 remote centres located all across India. The lectures in this course would be delivered by the Professors of from IIT Bombay and IIT Madras. To make the process smooth, the software A-VIEW, audio-video connectivity is enabled in all the centres and IIT Bombay. The course consists of lectures, live interactions followed by lab sessions.

This innovative method of education has been developed at IIT Bombay, under the leadership of Prof. D B Phatak. It allows the participation of a large number of lady teachers, who normally are unable to join contact programmes at distant locations with a facility to choose their training centres with convenience He interacted with the remote centres from Kanyakumari, Rajkot, Srinagar and Nagpur.
