In a move to promote technical education for women, Delhi Government would soon be setting up  a technical university exclusively for women.

This was announced by Delhi’s Chief Minister Sheila Dixit after the Delhi cabinet approved the same at a cabinet meeting. The  CM said, “To focus on participation of women engineers in nation-building and encouraging technical education among women, Women’s Technical University will be set up in the capital.”

The Cabinet decided that the existing Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology, which comes under the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, will be upgraded to form the university.

The CM  said that the national capital would be the first ‘state’ to have an exclusive technical university for women. It is proposed to be a non-affiliating university, aimed at ensuring an environment for excellence in engineering education and active participation of women in engineering, science and technology.
