UGC: Fellowship to NET qualified students of UPEs

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has declared to grant UGC fellowship to the NET-qualified Ph.D/M.Phil students from universities identified as Universities for Potential for Excellence. Earlier, the fellowship was from candidates from central universities only. This decision is applicable on full-time Ph.D and M.Phil students from the varsities identified by UPEs are now eligible for fellowship from the commission.

While giving an acceptance to the initiative, the University of Pune (UoP), which was among the first five Indian universities to be recognized as a UPE, has invited proposals from all its Ph.D/M.Phil students to take the fellowship benefit.

As per K Gunasekaran, UGC’s additional secretary, recently wrote to the UoP vice-chancellor stating that the commission has approved an enhancement in the fellowship grant to Ph.D/M.Phil students.

There has been a revision n the grant from Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000 per month for Ph.D scholars and Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000 per month to M.Phil scholars. A Rs 10,000 per annum additional grant will be given as contingency expense for students with science subjects and Rs 8,000 per annum for students with humanities and social science subjets. Students from the UPE will get the same benefits, he adds.
