A teacher is a person who provides education for pupils and students. The role of teacher is often formal and ongoing, carried out at a school or other place of formal education. Making a bold statement on the education qualifications of teaching community in India, Kapil Sibal, HRD Minister said that it is ironic that we are talking about teacher education instead of discussing the education of children. In other words, we have accepted the fact that our teaching communities are not as educated as they should be. He stressed on the increasing need to attract the best minds in the teaching profession to educate children while addressing the 59th meeting of Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE).

On the support of it, the minister also accepted the fact that both the central and state governments have failed to get access to high quality people in teaching profession to build the future of India. This profession has been let down by giving that profession a sectarian interest that is unfortunate. There is a need to rethink strategically. To get educated in an efficient manner, the best minds in teaching profession should be created, Sibal emphasized.

Acting on the suggestions of the minister, the CABE has decided to develop a framework for the new central programme for teachers’ training. The highest advisory body in education, decided to form a committee to develop the “framework and processes” for the National Mission on Teachers and Teaching being launched by the central government. Also, quality of teaching is in the focus in the 12th Five-Year Plan (2012-17) for successfully implementing the right to education. The National Mission on Teachers and Teaching focuses on giving quality training to teachers.
