MS University based in Baroda and University Grants Commission’s (UGC) have decided to join hands for preventing┬áplagiarism among candidates writing their PhD and MPhil theses by working with national repository for Indian Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD) – Shodhganga.

The UGC’s Information and Library Network Centre (INFLIBNET) – which provides online journals and resources to the universities – launched Shodhganga in 2010 as the repository for the Indian ETD. The repository has the ability to capture, index, store, disseminate and preserve ETDs submitted by the researchers.

According to the updated report, Shodhganga’s website suggests that 63 universities across the country have so far signed an MoU with INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad to participate in the project. MSU is expected to sign an MoU with the INFLIBNET Centre to join Shodhganga project in a month’s time.

MSU Vice-Chancellor Professor Yogesh Singh said that, UGC has already issued a gazette notification asking all the universities to join the project. Due to Shodhganga, ETD is becoming available to the worldwide academic community besides indicating the trends and direction of the research in each area of the study. The PhD and MPhil theses at MSU will be scrutinized on Shodhganga for checking possible plagiarism and will take action against researchers who have indulged in plagiarism. “Plagiarism is a growing concern for the research community worldwide. We hope this initiative will help control it,he added.

Dr Amit Dholakia, registrar said, MSU for the past two years has been accepting theses in digital format. Once we sign the MoU, all such theses will be uploaded and students across the country will be able to access theses of MSU students.

The universities that sign MoU with the INFLIBNET Centre are given incentives in terms of funds for digitisation of old theses as well as for setting up of ETD labs. Besides, universities also get access to an anti-plagiarism software tool that detects plagiarism and thereby helps in improving quality of the theses.
