Jadavpur University or JU is located in the eastern metropolis of Kolkata in India. It is considered to be one of the foremost centres of research and learning in India. It has two campuses i.e.  the main campus at Javadpur and the new campus at Salt lake which are located at approximately 12.6 kilometres and 8.8 kilometres from the city respectively. The university offer courses in three faculties namely arts, science, engineering and technology. Is is said to be one of the most sought after universities of the country. With the Centre of Excellence Jadavpur University is now trying for the tag of central university. Efforts for the same have already begun with Jadavpur University Teachers Association (JUTA) passing a resolution to that effect.

Prof. Partha Biswas, the secretary of JUTA, has explained that they had made a detailed study of the university’s present condition and prepared a report which justifies their plea for bringing it under the central university act. We have studied data of the last 10 years and the report has been submitted to the chief minister and the education minister. Now, it is up to them to take a decision,he adds. According to him, it is high time that such an established institution gets ‘Central University’ tag as it will help in funds, much needed infrastructure expansion etc.

As per Prof. Ajitava Raychowdhury, Head of Department of Economics, funding is a major factor. Once it becomes a central university, it would be easier for us to retain best of the talent. The state government provides the bare minimum fund, a greater part of which goes into meeting the salary bill of the teachers and non teaching employees. Lack of proper funding has not allowed the university to build its infrastructure to meet the growing needs. A fully fledged university should have a Law School, a Medical School and many other things, he adds. Also, the increasing difference between the pay scales of central university and the state universities has posed the challenge for the university to retain quality teachers.
