If things go as planned, the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), will soon have a trans-disciplinary research cluster at its campus which will take the help of students and researchers from different faculties to solve major issues, said S K Sopory, vice-chancellor, JNU.

The proposal for this research cluster has been sent to the 12th Five Year Plan.

Sopory was speaking on the sidelines of a two-day conference organised by the Planning Commission and British Council in the city on Saturday. The idea behind such a cluster, said Sopory, is to use the research of the brightest minds of science as well as humanities departments to try and address issues ranging from climate change to public health.

“The proposal for a cluster at JNU has been submitted to the 12th five year plan. The basic aim of such a cluster is to promote cross-talks between different departments and foster creative and academic synergies. Today, we need to create individuals with open minds and creating such clusters is one way by which that can be done,” said Sopory.

The university had come up with a trans-disciplinary seminar series recently where faculties of sciences, social sciences and humanities participated.

“There are so many problems today that cannot be solved by one particular department. By limiting our research work to one department, we are restricting our capabilities. We are looking into cognitive science and planning to rope in all the different schools, including linguistics, psychology, language, culture studies and environmental sciences,” he added.
