Research and education in the area of management has proved to be one of the vital requirements in the higher education. Earlier, the research was majorly conducted in the areas related to science streams. But, with the advent of globalisation, privatization and liberalization, the stream of management has also gained a momentum. The inclination of students towards this stream can be supported with a great number of management institutions and colleges in India. It is important to note here that instead of reputed management institutions and the versatile courses offered by them, there is a strong need of effective and efficient research aptitude amongst students and faculty. In the light of the above requirement and to further improvise the culture of research in this particular field, the Singapore Management University (SMU) and Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at facilitating management research and education. The SMU was set up as Singapore’s first publicly funded autonomous university in the year 2000 with a vision to be a internationally recognized university for research and education. The IIMB, established in 1972, today offers a range of post-graduate and doctoral as well as executive education programmes. IIMB Centres of Excellence are engaged in adding value to their communities in the area of management.

Dr. Pankaj Chandra, Director, IIM Bangalore shred that IIMB’s efforts are aimed at emerging as the premier research school out of India. The partnership with SMU will reinforce this strategic direction. It will provide an access to research and teaching opportunities in South-East Asia and create global opportunities and visibility for our students and faculty, he adds.

Prof.  Rajendra K. Srivastava, SMU’s Provost and Deputy President (Academic Affairs) said, there is strong presence of both Bangalore and Singapore in Asia, we look forward to the IIMB-SMU collaboration playing a major role in the development in the both i.e. Bangalore-Singapore educational and commercial axis. The partnership will facilitate joint research and publications by faculty of SMU and IIMB including the organization of research seminars and workshops, research projects in research centers at both institutions in areas of mutual interest. SMU and IIMB have also planned to invite doctoral students and junior faculty to participate in summer / winter courses to be hosted or co-hosted by the institutions. The MoU will also prove helpful in exploring the joint executive in education, faculty exchange and student mobility between the two institutions. With due importance, given to the common focus of both SMU and IIMB and their leadership positions in their respective territories and management research , the tie-up is expected to boost research productivity at both the institutions.
