Indo-US: Higher Education Strategic Meet on June 12

The third Indo-US Strategic Dialogue will begin from next week. The meeting would focus on the human development and an enhancement in people to people relationship. Some major bilateral announcements are also expected in the education sector. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would co-chair with the Indian Human Resources Development Minister, Kapil Sibal, a day-long Higher Education Dialogue which is follow-on to last fall’s Higher Education Summit, on 12th June 2012. This will focus on advanced research and innovation and workforce development, specifically, community colleges.

It is expected that the two countries will announce the first eight partnership projects to be funded jointly by the US and India through the Obama-Singh 21st Century Knowledge Initiative. Prior to this on 11th June, 2012, Vilasrao Desmukh, Science and Technology Minister, would co-chair a meeting with his American counterpart discussing cooperation in the field of science and technology. Also, the ministerial would be preceded by the official level meetings on science and technology on June 8, 2012.

According to the sources, representatives from more than 15 US Government agencies and research institutions will meet with their Indian counterparts this year to expand cooperation in the Basic and Applied Sciences, Health and Medical Sciences, and Atmospheric, Environment and Earth Sciences. The discussions will surround topics like policy initiatives to strengthen bilateral research cooperation, to commercialize research and to retain and advance women in science.
