IISc scientist, NCBS Director will be honored with HK Firodia Awards for 2012

Scientist R A Mashelkar announced the prestigious H K Firodia awards for 2012 while celebrating excellence in the field of science. This year the award will go to T V Ramakrishnan of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and K Vijay Raghavan, director of the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bangalore. Both the scientists will be felicitated on October 1st, 2012 by K Kasturirangan, member of the planning commission (science) on the 17th edition of the annual awards.

The award received by Ramakrishnan carries a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh, a trophy and citation. Ramakrishnan is a theoretical physicist known for his pioneering contributions to physics of electronics, disordered systems, density functional approach to classical condensed systems and biological physics. He is a distinguished associate at the department of Physics in IISc and a professor at the Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi.

Further, Raghavan received a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, a trophy and citation. Raghavan is known for his original contributions to the field of life sciences, particularly to developmental biology, genetics and neurogenetics. His research primarily focuses on principles and mechanisms that control the nervous systems and muscles during human development and how they direct specific locomotor behaviour.
