Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is one of the most reputed institutions of the country. It has come out with its annual report (2010-11) that highlights the excellent research contributions of its teachers. According to the repost more than 4,000 publications were published from BHU that include 2,949 research papers i.e. 1475 papers in international journals and 1474 papers in national journals. During this period, 93 new research projects, with total grants exceeding Rs 2,067 lakh were sanctioned. The number ongoing projects are 488. Most of the major funding agencies of the country, including University Grants Commission and the department of science and technology have provided research support. Academic contributions of BHU teachers have been recognized and several teachers have been elected fellows of reputed academies. Besides, fellowships were awarded to teachers to undertake research abroad.

The survey report published in May 2010 showed that BHU was ranked first among all Indian universities. This recognition was based on the analysis of six parameters – reputation, quality of academic input, quality of faculty, research publications/reports/projects, infrastructure, and placement opportunities. During 2009-10 academic session, a 10-year survey published in the prestigious journal Current Science had placed BHU on number one position among top 25 Indian universities for publishing maximum number of research papers in indexed journals.

The department of physics produced maximum research papers published in international journals (254), followed by chemistry department (160), zoology department (82) and mathematics department (56). The top departments for publishing research papers in national journals were political science (70), Hindi (70), applied mathematics (70), geography (65), geology (62) and ancient Indian history culture and archaeology (60).  Apart from the physics department, the department of electronics (now a part of IIT-BHU) published maximum 25 articles in international journals, followed by the department of geography (10). In national journals, the faculty members of Hindi department published 50 articles followed by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (32), vyakaran department (22), faculty of commerce (21), Jyotish department (21), geography department (15) and political science department (15). By publishing 20 books/chapters, the faculty of management studies was on the top, followed by Hindi department (17), department of mycology and plant pathology (14), AIHC and archaeology department (10) and Jyotish department (10).
