BHU awards D Lit for Amitabh Bachchan

Banaras Hindu University has awarded an honourary D. Lit (Honoris Causa) to Bollywood superstar- Amitabh Bachchan. Bachchan was  conferred with the degree at its 94th convocation function in absentia.

The vice chancellor of University- Lalji Singh said that the degree would be given by  the Faculty of Performing Arts, of the University. The other personalities who were felicitated with the D Lit degree include Dr S Ayappan, director general of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and vice chancellor of JNU, New Delhi, Prof SK Sopori.

According to VC, a total of 8,213 BHU students including 4,689 under graduate (UG), 3,065 (PG) and 459 PhD students would be awarded degrees in the convocation function this year. He said that a large number of teachers and students of various universities will also participate in the function.

Earlier, speaking as the chief guest of the convocation function, Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar emphasised the need to change the kind of education being imparted to youths today. Citing the glorious history of BHU, founded by Pt Madan Mohan Malviya, she said there is a need to come up with education system in universities that provide moral, spiritual and national values along with traditional and modern knowledge of science. BHU Chancellor Karan Singh and vice chancellor Lalji Singh were among those present.
