Raghuram Rajan, Economic Advosor to PM

According to Raghuram Rajan, economic advisor to PM Manmohan Singh, emphasized the need for more organizational training in the education sector as India’s formal education system is failing.

He stated, “India’s formal education system is failing and government school system is failing – government is not delivering the goods.” He added that India needs to improve in the field of education if it hopes to retain and grow its competitive advantage in world economy.

Speaking at a fund raiser, Rajan said India needed to incentivize its good teachers to improve education quality across schools and universities. “In Indian primary schools, half of the students are not in class. Average schools are better in the US and dropout rate is more in India although students are more hungry for education,” he said.

Referring to the fact that higher education is the key to one’s well-being, Rajan said, “Education is game changer.” He said China had a better emphasis on education than India leading to a better average literacy rate.
