According to a news report in Times of India, Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) are considering conducting their joint entrance examination (JEE) for admission to the IITs online on the lines of the Indian Institutes of Management. While the common admission test (CAT) for entry into IIMs went online three years ago and there are other international postgraduate tests like GMAT and GRE which are conducted online, none of India’s undergraduate tests are online yet.

IIT-Delhi, which is organizing IIT-JEE 2012, has invited all IIT directors for a workshop hosted by the JEE office, where an online model will be demonstrated. According to sources Education Testing Services (ETS), which conducts the GRE and several other popular global online examinations, will make the demonstration.

However opinion is divided among experts on the feasibility for an online JEE. An online exam has advantages in form of faster test taking, ease of test taking and quicker results. But in a large country like India conducting an online test across multiple locations for a huge number students can lead to several problems. IIM CAT too faced initial teething problems.

But according to some discussion about online JEE is futile as it is only about when as sooner or later it would have to be conducted online with everything getting online.
