The state assembly has passed the Bihar Universities Amendment Bill. Now, any new university in the state would be set up according to the provisions of the Bihar Universities Act.

Speaking on this occasion, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar opined that for better coordination of universities, Bihar Universities Amendment Act and Patna University Amendment Act are important. He further added that the state government is willing to run old important universities as centre of excellence so that the young generation can get latest knowledge. He also stressed on the importance of establishing new universities.

The Chief Minister said that the state government is considering the formation of three-member search committee under the new Act to prepare a panel of names for the VCs. He indicated that the committee would have directors of IIT and NIT as members.

The current government had introduced the bill in 2010 to curb some of the powers enjoyed by the governor as the chancellor of the universities. Although, the bill ‘Bihar University (Amendments) Bill 2010’ was passed by both houses of the state legislature in March 2010 only, but the governor withheld it ever since and recently returned it, asking if it was a money bill.
