Dr. Y K Chawla has taken office as Director, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh.

The earlier director, Dr K K Talwar had served for seven years as the Director of PGIMER,  at the premier tertiary health care institute of the Punjab region, leaving office around five months back in April. In the interim period, Dr Vinay Sakhuja, Head of the Department of Nephrology, held officiating charge as PGI director.

Dr. Chawla’s name was recommended by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). He was heading the Department of Hepatology, and was selected over 23 other candidates, including 12 from PGIMER, Chandigarh itself and 5 from AIIMS, to bag one of India’s top medical appointments.

Dr Chawla’s was most recently in the news for heading a team of doctors which conducted the first ever cadaveric liver transplant in PGI. Dr. Chawla has spent over 28 years at the PGI after joining as a lecturer in 1983 and became head of hepatology department in 1999 . He received Dr B C Roy Medical Council of India Silver Jubilee Research Award in 1999 for research in the field of Hepatology.

He has done super speciality in gastroenterology after his MBBS and MD from Jabalpur Medical College in 1969-78.
