More than 120 arts, commerce and science colleges of Gujarat do not have principals. The state has 270 odd colleges belonging to different streams.

According to Gujarat University officials, the state does not have principals in more than 44 per cent of its colleges and college managements are facing a lot of difficulties in managing without principals. The colleges are also not getting suitable candidates for the top post.  This is chiefly due to the high eligibility qualification required for the principal’s post while the state does not have enough candidates with such eligibility.

An academician said, “The eligibility qualification requires a principal to have a Phd degree as well as 10 years of teaching experience. These criteria make recruitment extremely tough”.

According to concerned officials, the situation is especially difficult in the B.Ed colleges where only 15-20 per cent colleges have full time principals. The others are running with the help of in-charge principals. Several commerce colleges are also running with the help of in-charge principals.

As per some educationists, the situation can become worse as the University Grants Commission (UGC) has now said that candidates also need to clear the national eligibility test (NET) or the state level eligibility test (SLET) to become a principal.
