According to Himachal Pradesh Education Minister Ishwar Das Dhiman, the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) medical college and hospital in Mandi would start functioning from the academic session of 2012-13.

The ESIC hospital is a central government-funded 500-bed medical hospital-cum-college. Work on the hospital started in Feb 2009. Its foundation stone was laid by Union Labour and Employment minister Oscar Fernandes.

The expected costs of setting up the medical college and nursing school cum hospital has been around Rs.10 billion. The college would have 100 seats each in medical college and nursing school with 40 percent of the seats reserved for students from Himachal state. How ever the students would have to sign a bond with ESIC making it mandatory for them to work in its hospitals for at least five years..

The hospital would provide medical services to person covered under the ESIC social security scheme and also other sections of society.

Himachal Pradesh has two more medical colleges, the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital at Shimla and Dr. Rajender Prasad Govt. Medical College, Kangra at Tanda. It also has Bhojia Dental College & Hospital at Baddi, Solan, Himachal Pradesh Dental College, SunderNagar and Solan Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital at Kumarhatti, Solan.
