Assam is setting up  Rajiv Gandhi University of Cooperative Management to boost the state’s cooperative sector.

The state assembly passed the Rajiv Gandhi University of Cooperative Management Bill, 2010 recently for setting up the states’ first such university exclusively for cooperative sector.

The university to be named after former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi will come up in upper Assam’s Sibasagar district, about 400-kilometers from here.

A government official said the university will offer courses on co-operative management and at the same time will train up existing manpower in both government and private sector to manage the cooperative sector.

“The university will provide both short term and long term courses on management of cooperative agencies, financial management as well as other developmental issues. This will be the first such university in the entire Northeast region,” said the official.

The university will also carry out research and study on government projects in cooperative sector and suggest measures for proper management and implementation of schemes.

“The co-operative agency is playing a key role in rural economy in Northeast including Assam but the sector requires trained manpower and proper monitoring. Self-Help-Groups created in our villages are offering thousands of jobs to poor men and women. The university will provide support in proper training and management of the sector,” the official said.

The move comes amid demand for proper management of co-operative agencies under government. Several co-operative banks and development agencies in Assam are on the verge of closure due to poor management.

But the state government has seceded to take up steps to rejuvenate the co-operative agencies to boost up state’s rural economoy.

“The training and courses to be offered by the university are being worked out for the Rajiv Gandhi University of Co-operative Management,” added the official.
